Clive Cousins, LL.B.
Commencing practice in 1977, Clive’s career has given him extensive experience in property law as well as corporate and commercial work. This work has included structuring many public floats, partnerships, joint ventures and trusts which form the basis of the modern corporate.
Clive advises clients – which include a number of property developers – on asset protection and business structures as an integral part of their business activities.
Grant Smith, LL.B., B.Com(Hons)
Graduating in 1992 with an LL.B., B.Com (Hons) (majoring in economics), Grant began his career working in estate administration, residential conveyancing, trusts and asset protection. He is expert in forming trusts and corporate structures that provide protection for various assets types as well as retaining the flexibility required by his client’s changing needs and aspirations.
Grant enjoys working alongside his clients and prides himself on his ability to respond promptly to a variety of situations and solve problems.
David Ballantyne, LL.B., B.Com
David joined Canterbury Legal in April 2015. He is a graduate of Otago University holding bachelor degrees in Law and Commerce. David specialises in litigation and dispute resolution where he has a broad range of experience and is able to draw on his background in commercial, property and private client work.
David has a proven ability to deal with complex multi-layer briefs, assess and address weaknesses and develop and implement sound litigation strategies around his client's objectives. He has recent experience with multi-party litigation, litigation funding and injunctive relief (including securing search orders and freezing orders) in the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal jurisdictions.
Eric Lee, LL.B.
Eric graduated from the University of Canterbury in 2002 and joined Canterbury Legal in 2004 as a Lawyer and practised with us through to 2012 when he and his wife returned to Malaysia. There he enrolled as a lawyer and practiced until April 2016.
Eric returned to Christchurch in May 2016 and recommenced with Canterbury Legal as a Senior Solicitor specialising in conveyancing, business and trust law.
Always patient and eager to help and advise, Eric will take the time to explain matters to clients in plain language.
Whilst fluent in English, Eric also speaks conversational Mandarin, Malay and other Malaysian dialects and acts for numerous Asian clients.
Jim Eddy, LL.B.
Jim is Canterbury Legal’s residential and commercial property law specialist. He has a particular interest in helping first home buyers through their first conveyancing transaction. Jim has practiced in many areas of law including; corporate, litigation and relationship property.
In his spare time Jim enjoys spending time with family, and riding his motorcycle.
Susan has worked in legal offices for the past 20 years, principally as a personal assistant to senior partners and has undertaken legal executive work. Susan was appointed Practice Manager when the firm of Canterbury Legal was established and as such is responsible for the administration of the office and trust account.
Lawyer (Litigation and dispute resolution)
Holly joined our Litigation and Disputes Resolution team in August 2016. She has practised in a wide range of areas including insolvency, property, commercial transaction, relationship property, and insurance.
Holly has recently been appointed as a panel member of the New Zealand Judicial Control Authority for Racing.
In her spare time she runs marathons, rides her horse and organises sports activities for the firm.
Jessica joined Canterbury Legal shortly before we relocated back to the city. She is a legal secretary and works with our lawyers on specific projects. Jessica enjoys the complexity of law and works industriously to ensure that the office runs smoothly.
Sydney joined our team in November 2016 as a summer clerk and has been retained in a part time capacity while she completes her studies. She assists with litigation research as part of her duties.
