Legal Update: New Personal Grievance Risk for Employers

A new law is about to transform how Kiwi employers handle pay transparency. The Employment Relations (Employee Remuneration Disclosure) Amendment Bill introduces a new personal grievance category and a reverse onus of proof—meaning employers must prove pay discussions weren’t part of any adverse action.

This requires immediate action from HR, leadership, and legal teams. Review your policies, retrain your managers, and futureproof your frameworks before it’s too late.

With some 25,000 societies or so still to reregister by the cutoff date of 5 April 2026, we're about to embark on a nationwide campaign to assist societies with the process.
